Man Charged in Deadly ‘Safe Haven' Shooting

Pittsburgh police say they've arrested a man in a fatal shooting last spring outside a building established as a safe haven for children.

Allegheny County Jail inmate Tariq Devon Long was charged Tuesday with criminal homicide and a firearms violation in the death of 38-year-old Jeffrey Jackson.

Police say the 24-year-old Long was being held in the jail since September on pending drug and firearms charges from an unrelated case. He's pleaded no contest to prior drug charges.

Jackson was gunned down about 5:10 a.m. on May 11 outside the Art House center in the city's crime-ridden Homewood neighborhood.

Jackson was shot outside the building where a local artist encourages children to express themselves through art in hopes of revitalizing the area.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 3.
