Man Caught at Mexican Border Sentenced in NJ Shooting

A man who had fled to the Mexican border after a northern New Jersey shooting in February 2013 has been sentenced.

Forty-year-old Karl Friday, of Denville, was sentenced Friday to nine years in state prison for shooting the man in Newton and then assaulting a corrections officer.

Authorities say he broke into the home of his victim and fired a shot through a door with an assault rifle after the victim barricaded himself in a room with his girlfriend and two children.

Friday was apprehended two weeks later by Border Patrol agents at a Mexican border checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Texas.

The New Jersey Herald reports that his wife is being enrolled in a pretrial intervention program for helping him to flee.
