Man Bashes Unsuspecting Bar Patron With Bat

Police are searching for a bat-toting attacker who they say bashed the head of an unsuspecting man having a drink at a crowded corner tavern in East Lansdowne, Delaware County Wednesday night.

The victim, a 43-year-old man known as Chuck, was relaxing inside Dan's Corner Tavern around 10:20, when Charles Smith, 40, approached him from behind and began hitting him in the head with an aluminum bat, said Upper Darby Police.

"The intention looked like he wanted to kill him because he hit him on the head," owner Sunli Seam told NBC10. "One more wack or two more wacks, he might be dead."

Surveillance video caught Smith beating the victim until he fell to the ground. It also shows the suspect fleeing the bar before hopping into a silver Dodge Ram.

Seam says he's never seen the suspect before, but police say the victim has. According to authorities, Chuck is in a relationship with Smith's ex-girlfriend. They say she has a protection order against him.

Following the violent attack, Chuck was rushed to Delaware County Memorial Hospital where he was treated for head injuries.

Seam tells NBC10 that he checked in on the victim this morning and he is "doing better."

Police say Smith has a long rap sheet dating back more than 20 years. Once he's caught, he'll face multiple charges in Wednesday's beating including aggracated and simple assault.

Anyone with information on the suspect's location is urged to call Upper Darby Police.
