Local Towns Ranked Some of the Safest in Pennsylvania in Report

Several local suburbs ranked high on a list of the safest Pennsylvania towns, according to an analysis by Movoto Real Estate.

Upper Providence Township in Delaware County claimed the number one spot on the list, which is determined by the number of crimes in areas with a population of 10,000 people or more.

Movoto Real Estate used data from the 2013 FBI Uniform Crime Report to determine the number of murders, violent crimes, property crimes and chance of crimes per person.

The chance of being a victim of crime in Upper Providence Township in Delaware County is 1 in 382, according to the report.

Buckingham Township in Bucks County earned the number two spot and Upper Uwchlan Township in Chester County came in at number three. In fifth place was Northampton, Bucks County followed by Lower Salford Township in Montgomery County.

On the list of top 50, Newton Township, New Britain, Doylestown Township and Upper Providence Township in Montgomery County made the list. Additionally, three municipalities throughout Bucks County secured a title in the study.

The group looked at 200 towns throughout Pennsylvania. None of the towns on the top 50 list had even one murder in 2013. The violent crimes per person maxed out at 0.00069 – so few crimes that it barely rounds up to even a tenth of one person.

Buckingham Township, with a population of 20,396 had fewer violent crimes than the number one, but nearly twice the number of property crimes and total crimes, the report found. Your chance of being a victim of crime is 1 in 2,016.

At number five, Northampton Township had the highest population of 39,772. The number of violent crimes per person was 0.00025 and the total crimes per person were calculated to be 0.0049.

The chance of being a victim of crime in Upper Providence Township in Delaware County is 1 in 382 – no other town came close to competing with that low probability.

Over the years, the list had very little overlap, according to Movoto Real Estate. The only township to make the list twice is Franklin Park, which about 20 minutes north of Pittsburgh.
