Eviction Near for Century Old Butcher?

After more than a century Harry Ochs & Sons’ butcher stand could be on the chopping block.

The Reading Terminal Market staple is in debt and facing eviction, reports the Inquirer.

Since 1906 the butchery has found its home in the heart of Reading Terminal but the Ochs family business owes about $21,000 in back rent and utility charges and faces possible eviction, according to court papers mentioned to the Inky.

Current owner Nicholas Ochs’ father Harry G. Ochs made the butcher stand popular after taking it over in 1947.

The elder Ochs was one of the driving forces in saving the market a couple decades back and even had a street named after him in 2004.

The elder Ochs died in 2009 since then market management has treated Nicholas differently, he says.

There is hope that the butcher shop can remain open. Market Management said that they would drop their complaint if Ochs made a "serious dent" in the debt.
