LGBT Mummers Group Grows

The "Miss Fancy" Brigade - an LGBT group comprised of the leading female impersonators in Philadelphia - announced an expansion for the upcoming New Year's parade.

Drag Kings, who are women dressed up as men, will be marching down Broad Street along with the brigade's Drag Queens who participated in the celebration for the first time in 2013.

To celebrate the addition - a move that includes more members of the LGBT community - the "Miss Fancy" Brigade popped parasols full of glitter and a string band played at The Mummers Museum Tuesday morning.

"It is great thing when all the people of Philadelphia are included in the city's traditions," said Equality Pennsylvania's Communications Director Levana Layendecker.

Last year 10 members performed as part of the "Miss Fancy" Brigade. Each female impersonator introduced a troop from the Fancy Brigades Division, which presents an elaborate theatrical performance to cap-off the parade.

This year's brigade will include Brittany Lynn, City Councilman Mark Squilla, Director of Tourism Scott Brown and Vice President of the Fancy Brigade Association Bill Burke, Jr.

The 114th Annual Mummers Parade will begin on New Year's Day at 9:30 a.m. and take place North on Broad Street to LOVE Park(16th and JFK Boulevard).

Aside from 11 fancy brigades, the parade will include three comic clubs, two fancy division units, 17 string bands and eight wench brigades.
