Lewes Debates Financial Concerns Over Building New Library

Residents in Lewes, Delaware are debating the financial benefits and burdens of building a new public library.

The Daily Times reports the library has asked the city to contribute about $1 million to the new building. That's in addition to the $1 million already spent on land for the building.

The library also wants the city to help pay utilities running about $40,000 per year, as it has in the past.

The city held a public workshop this week to hear residents' ideas and concerns. Some said the library was being built for the larger region but that outside visitors aren't being asked to pay for it.

Library board member Hugh Leahy says more than 90 percent of the $10.9 million project will be funded by outside donors and grants.
