Murderer of Lacrosse Star Loses Bid to Avoid Death Penalty

A man convicted of murdering a college lacrosse star from suburban Philadelphia in 1996 has lost a bid to avoid the death penalty.

The state Supreme Court last week upheld a lower court ruling denying Arthur Bomar's appeal for post-conviction relief.

Prosecutors say they still expect the 55-year-old Bomar's lawyers to file a federal appeal.

Bomar was convicted of murder, kidnapping, rape and abuse of a corpse in the slaying of 22-year-old Aimee Willard.

Prosecutors said Bomar, on parole for a Nevada murder conviction, abducted the George Mason University student from her car.

Bomar appealed his December 1998 death sentenced alleging ineffective counsel, court error, and constitutional issues.
