Kutztown University Chooses New President

State university system officials say Western Illinois University provost Kenneth Hawkinson has been chosen to be the next president of Kutztown University in eastern Pennsylvania.

The State System of Higher Education announced Tuesday that Hawkinson will take over as president of the Berks County university in July.

Hawkinson has held the Western Illinois post since January 2012 and was hired in 1988 as an assistant professor in the communications department at the university. Officials said he also served in the army as both an infantry officer and spokesman.

Kutztown acting president Carlos Vargas-Aburto was hired as the 18th president of Southeast Missouri State earlier this month.
