Woman Caught With Loaded Gun, Hidden Knife in Her Carry-on at PHL

TSA officers say the NJ woman had both weapons on her as she tried to board a plane in Philly

A woman tried to board a flight in Philadelphia with a gun and concealed knife tucked away in her carry-on luggage, according to Philadelphia Police.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan tweeted about what Transportation safety Administration officer discovered on 53-year-old Kathryn Spiropoulos around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning at a Philadelphia International Airport Terminal D/E security checkpoint:

The weapons -- a GLOCK 30 handgun loaded with 10 rounds (none chambered) and the credit-card knife -- allegedly belonged to Spiropoulos, of Ewing, N.J. who was boarding a flight bound for Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, according to the TSA.

Officials didn't say which airline the woman was supposed to fly, but they did say she does not have a permit to carry.

Spiropoulos is the transportation supervisor for the Lawrence Township School District in Lawrenceville, N.J.

The school board plans to fully cooperate with police and will take action, if necessary, once the investigation is complete, according to a statement from the school district.

TSA officers detained the woman until Philadelphia Police could take her into custody. She is facing gun charges.

This incident marked the fourth time this year that TSA officers said they found a weapon in someone’s luggage at Philly International.

The TSA can fine people from $250 to $11,00 for bringing a firearm to airport security.
