Jury Rejects Major Charges in Social Club Slaying

An eastern Pennsylvania jury has cleared one defendant and convicted another only on lesser charges in a shootout at an eastern Pennsylvania social club that killed a woman and injured five other people.

The Northampton County panel on Friday convicted 34-year-old Rene Figueroa of Allentown of involuntary manslaughter, rejecting the first-degree murder conviction sought by prosecutors.

The (Easton) Express-Times reports that jurors also convicted Figueroa of receiving stolen property and a firearms crime.

Forty-year-old Javier Rivera-Alvarado of Allentown was acquitted of all 20 counts against him, including three counts of attempted homicide.

Both were charged in the December 2012 slaying of 23-year-old Yolanda Morales outside the Puerto Rican Beneficial Society in Bethlehem.

Figueroa still faces allegations that he solicited a prison inmate to kill witnesses in the trial.
