It is now illegal in New Jersey to import or export big game trophies of animals that are threatened or endangered.
Gov. Chris Christie on Thursday signed the measure approved by lawmakers in response to the killing of Cecil, a Zimbabwean lion, whose death sparked protests last year.
Those who violate the ban face a civil penalty of up to $1,000 for a first offense and up to $3,000 for subsequent offense.
People can no longer bring in parts or products from animals including elephants, leopards, lions, tigers, and rhinos.
