Illegal Burning Leads to Large Fire

Environmental officials say that improper burning at a seed company led to a much larger fire in eastern Pennsylvania.

The state Department of Environmental Protection has cited SeedWay for burning solid waste without a permit.

A company representative did not immediately return a call for comment Wednesday.

The DEP says workers were burning pallets, boxes and paper bags on SeedWay's property near Emmaus on Nov. 20.

Officials say the flames weren't properly extinguished and spread to adjoining structures and material. Huge plumes of black smoke could be seen from miles away.

DEP spokeswoman Colleen Connolly says SeedWay has been cooperating with the agency, which issued the violation notice on Dec. 5.

SeedWay is headquartered in Hall, N.Y. It supplies farm, turf and vegetable seed.
