Pennsylvania's House Transportation Committee has approved a plan to increase state transportation funding by $2 billion within five years.
The proposal approved Thursday relies mainly on a phasing in a five-year increase in the wholesale tax on gasoline. But it also includes a grab bag of other new taxes, including a tripling of the aviation jet fuel tax, increases in levies on tire purchases and leased vehicles and new authority for municipalities to increase certain local taxes to help finance public transportation.
The House plan would reduce the annual $450 million transfer to PennDOT that the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is required to make by $200 million a year but continue to require the remaining $250 million for mass transit.
Now lawmakers must reconcile differences between the House and Senate plans.
