Man Found Shot Dead in Burning “Speakeasy”

The scene of a house fire quickly became the scene of a man's death this morning.

Firefighters were called out to the 5900 block of Springfield Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia around 7:30 a.m. for a row house blaze.

Firefighters took less than 15 minutes to extinguish the flames on the first floor of the home but that was just the beginning.

On the second floor of the home was the body of a man with a gunshot wound to the head and stomach, according to Philadelphia Police.

Police blocked off the street as homcide detectives investigated.

A preliminary investigations showed that a man in his 70s was possibly operating a "speakeasy" out of the home he had lived in for about 20 years. Police say that someone broke into the home and during the burglary the homeowner was shot twice, gasoline was poured on his body and throughout the house and the place was lit on fire.

No one is under arrest and the investigation continues.
