Hospital Gown Catches Fire, Pennsylvania Patient Seriously Burned

A patient suffered serious burns over most of her body when a chair and her gown caught fire in her room at a central Pennsylvania hospital.

Williamsport Fire Chief Todd Heckman says three staff members at UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center were treated for minor injuries suffered extinguishing the Tuesday afternoon fire.

A hospital spokeswoman says the patient was transferred to the Lehigh Valley Health Network Regional Burn Center in Allentown.

The woman, whose name isn't being released, was the only patient in the room when nursing staff activated fire alarms after seeing smoke. The woman was found standing in her burning gown near a chair on fire.

Smoking is prohibited in the hospital and it wasn't immediately clear if that's being investigated as a possible cause.

Nursing staff used a fire extinguisher.
