Officials ‘battle’ over plans to decorate a Civil War monument

A decision to decorate a Civil War monument with Christmas lights and garland is drawing complaints in Hightstown, NJ.

Critics say it's disrespectful.

The "Lights on the Square" project involves stringing lights from the monument in the shape of a Christmas tree. The lights are set to be turned on during a ceremony on Friday evening.

All but one member of the town's Historic Preservation Commission resigned in protest over the plan. The lone holdout had proposed the idea to the town council.

Councilwoman Isabel McGinty tells The Times of Trenton that opponents should reserve judgment until they see the completed display.

According to The Times of Trenton, Mayor Steve Kirson will allow the former commission members to re-apply for their posts if they decide to return.
