A boy is in the hospital after being struck by a hit-and-run vehicle in Northeast Philadelphia.

The 9-year-old boy was getting out of a car parked along the 6700 block of Large Street Sunday at 7:35 p.m. when he was struck by a pickup truck passing by.

Witnesses said they heard a heavy "thud" and the sounds of screaming.

"I ran out to see what it was and the family was screaming and that gives you the chills," Tim Stephen told NBC10.

The striking vehicle then drove off, blowing a stop sign in the process, according to witnesses.

"He didn't even stop at the stop sign," Tianna Robinson, a witness, said. "Some guy was coming on a pickup truck and he chased after him."

The boy was taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital where he's in stable condition.

Police told NBC10 the hit-and-run driver, along with a group of men, returned to the crash scene about two hours later. The driver told police what happened, according to investigators.

Police told NBC10 they took the driver's information and let him leave but they will continue to investigate to determine if charges will be filed.
