Six of the 50 hospitals in the country identified in a report released Monday as having the highest markups over costs are in southeastern Pennsylvania, but those havenโt helped all of the hospitals on that list achieve healthy balance sheets.
Among the six local hospitals with the high cost-to-charge ratios, four posted operating deficits in fiscal 2014.
The study published in the new issue of Health Affairs was conducted by Ge Bai of Washington & Lee University and Gerard Anderson at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The pair reviewed 2012 data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to determine what hospitals had the highest markups over Medicareโs allowed charges.
