Health Care Providers Expand Farm-to-Families Program Prescribing Healthy Food

An effort to help residents of North Philadelphia eat healthier is expanding.

Temple University Hospital has joined the ‘Farm to Families’ program established by St. Christopher’s Foundation for Children in 2010 to provide fresh fruits, vegetables, and produce to families who may not have access or otherwise be able to afford the items.

St. Christopher’s Foundation — a nonprofit organization that collaborates with St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children to support the health and well-being of children in the community served by the pediatric hospital — partners with the Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative to source, package and deliver fresh food to community food hubs. The food packages are also available at health centers including St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.

“The most interesting part of the program is to see a patient’s doctor or nurse buying a box alongside them,” said Jamiliyah Foster, the program director. “It’s important for our customers to see that. We are all about providing fresh food and maintaining the dignity of our clients at the same time.”
