Haverford College Gets $25M Donation

Haverford College has received the largest gift in its history — a $25 million donation that will pay for significant renovations to the library.

The highly selective college outside Philadelphia announced the gift from alum Howard Lutnick on Saturday.

Lutnick is chairman of New York City financial firm Cantor Fitzgerald. He's become the college's largest donor, giving $65 million to the school over the last 25 years.

Lutnick lost his mother to cancer when he was a high school junior, and his father died a week into his freshman year at Haverford. The school allowed him to attend for free and he has been returning the kindness.

He tells The Philadelphia Inquirer that Haverford "taught me what it meant to be a human being."
