Gym Teacher Accused of Recording Woman in School Bathroom

Conal Wright, 36, of Lansdale, was arrested and charged with invasion of privacy and criminal attempt to invade privacy

A local gym teacher is out of a job and faces charges after police say he secretly recorded a female teacher inside a school staff bathroom.

On Jan. 28, a police officer responded to the Vantage Program School at 310 Schoolhouse Road in Souderton, Pa. When he arrived he was met by the school’s director. The director claimed that a female staff member was using the staff bathroom that morning when she noticed a Vivitar video camera attached underneath a blue plastic chair in the corner of the room. The video camera was facing directly towards the toilet.

Police say the teacher took the video camera, shut it off and then contacted her husband as well as the director. School administrators first told police they believed a member of the cleaning staff placed the camera in the bathroom. However, investigators say the cleaning staff was last inside the building on Friday, January 25, three days before the teacher found the camera. Investigators say there was no way the batteries would have lasted that long.

Police analyzed the SD card of the camera which showed recorded footage of a man installing the device. School administrators identified the man as Conal Wright, 36, of Lansdale, a gym teacher at the school. While being questioned by police, Wright allegedly admitted to placing the video camera inside the restroom.

He was arrested and charged with invasion of privacy and criminal attempt to invade privacy.

NBC10's Rosemary Connors briefly spoke to Wright Tuesday night.

"I feel badly about it," he said. "But that's all I can say."

Wright is scheduled for a hearing on April 4.

The Vantage Academy School is part of the Lakeside Educational Network, a program which provides educational opportunities for troubled students. Wright was fired from the school
