Former Mayor Nutter Spokesman Doug Oliver Seeks to Succeed Boss

A former spokesman for Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has joined the list of Democratic candidates vying to succeed the mayor.

Forty-year-old Doug Oliver formally announced his candidacy Saturday, vowing an end to what he called "the politics of low-expectations."

He promised to work to improve educational and career opportunities for residents that he said "ultimately improve livelihoods, revive communities and enhance public safety."

Oliver most recently worked as a spokesman for Philadelphia Gas Works.

He joins a field that already includes former councilman Jim Kenney, former district attorney Lynne Abraham, state Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams and Judge Nelson Diaz.

Oliver is by far the youngest candidate so far — and he says that's a plus, because the city's demographics are getting younger but the leadership doesn't reflect that.
