Heavy rain and wind slammed our area Tuesday. A First Alert expired Tuesday afternoon but the chance of a gusty, isolated thunderstorm remained for the rest of the day.
A cold front moved in overnight and steady rain began to fall, extending west to east. Through Tuesday's morning commute, we saw pockets of heavier rain as well as isolated thunderstorms that slowed drivers.
By 7 a.m., the storm had knocked out power to more than 14,000 AC Electric customers in Gloucester and Cumberland counties with other scattered outages throughout the region. The power outage caused the Lumberton Township School District to close schools and caused Franklin Township Public Schools to open two hours late. the outages were cut in half by 10:30 a.m.
By mid-morning, there were reports of downed wires in Mercer County, New Jersey and wind damage spreading across Philadelphia and its suburbs.
Besides the rain and possible thunderstorms, a Wind Advisory is in effect in South Jersey. Some areas saw wind gusts over 50 mph Tuesday morning. Winds could gust 25 to 35 mph in the afternoon.
Leaves can also be slippery when wet, leading to a walking hazard Tuesday.
By early Tuesday afternoon the back of the weather front had yet to move through the area. The Pennsylvania suburbs, Lehigh Valley and Berks County could saw some clearing before evening but the sunshine could help to produce an isolated shower or storm into the evening.
Some rain could linger against the shoreline overnight.
Conditions will clear Wednesday but colder air will also move in leading to temperatures in the 60s. The temperature will drop even more Thursday before rising again Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, another strong front will bring in rain, some heavy, and temperatures will drop into the 50s.
