Faulty Fire Detector at New Jersey Nuclear Plant

Officials say a faulty fire detector triggered an unusual event at the Salem 1 nuclear plant in Lower Alloways Creek Township.

The detector caused the release of carbon dioxide in the diesel fuel oil pump transfer rooms on Saturday night.

PSEG Nuclear spokesman Joe Delmar tells NJ.com the pumps fuel emergency generators in the event the plant loses power.

There was no threat to employees or the public and Salem 1 remained at full power.

An unusual event is the lowest of four emergency classifications at the plant.
