Ex-Hamilton, NJ Mayor Released to Halfway House

The former mayor of New Jersey's largest suburb is out of prison and in a halfway house.

Former Hamilton Mayor John Bencivengo was released from a federal prison in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and was transferred to a halfway house in Philadelphia.

Bencivengo served more than 18 months of a 38-month sentence for accepting bribes from a health insurance broker in exchange for promising to help the broker keep a contract with the township's school district.

Bencivengo was convicted in November 2012 of extortion, money laundering and bribery-related counts.

The 60-year-old is due to finish his sentence in June.
