Gun Jams to Prevent Suicide After Mercy Killing: Police

A 79-year-old Pittsburgh man was in custody and charged with criminal homicide in what police believe was the mercy killing of his ill wife, after his gun jammed keeping the man from also killing himself.

Police have yet to release the name of the suspect, though the Allegheny County medical examiner's office has identified the victim as 79-year-old Catherine Willett.

Police responded to the shooting about 8:25 p.m. Thursday and say they found the man and the gun -- which was still jammed when officers seized it.

Police did not immediately release the man's name Friday morning. He was being questioned at police headquarters and was to be taken to the Allegheny County Jail for arraignment and incarceration later in the day.

Police didn't immediately describe the woman's medical condition before she was shot.
