Blood Evidence Leads to Charges for Pennsylvania Man in Friend's Killing After Drug Binge

A prosecutor said a central Pennsylvania man was jailed on charges he killed a visiting California friend after a night of drug use, then hid the victim's body in the woods.

Online court records don't list an attorney for 29-year-old Ryan Gaines, of Philipsburg. He faces a preliminary hearing Nov. 26,

Clearfield County District Attorney William Shaw said Ronald Bruce Ford Jr. was visiting from San Diego when he and Gaines spent the evening doing drugs. When Ford fell asleep, Shaw said Gaines shot Ford in the head, then stole crack cocaine, heroin and money from Ford on Feb. 22, 2013.

Ford's family reported him missing and Gaines, who was jailed on unrelated charges, led police to the body last June but denied the killing. Police charged Gaines after matching blood found on a mattress to Ford.
