For years, Devil’s Pool has been the perfect way for local residents to cool off from blistering heat while satisfying their adrenaline rush. With a 30-foot drop from a cliff into a natural basin, the swimming hole, located in the Wissahickon Creek, offers a sense of adventure that a casual dip into the fountain just can’t provide.
Known as a distinctly local attraction, Devil’s Pool recently gained some mainstream exposure thanks to a front page photo in the New York Times last Thursday.
Yet those looking to experience its thrills for the first time this summer are in for a disappointment. The Devil’s Pool has been closed due to dirty conditions, according to News Works.

Police say that trash and graffiti from swimmers is the main reason for the closure. They also say that anyone looking to visit the basin anyway could be arrested for disorderly conduct.
While it’s unknown when it will be reopened, efforts are being made to improve it. The Friends of the Wissahickon, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the Wissahickon Valley, is currently undergoing a cleanup effort. The FOW is placing trash cans in the area, removing graffiti and educating locals on how to keep the area safe and clean.
