Democratic National Committee Gives $750,000 for Books in Philadelphia Schools

DNC host committee to donate $750K to Philadelphia schools

The host committee that organized Philadelphia's 2016 Democratic National Convention is closing up shop with a donation to city schools.

The committee will give $750,000 to the School District of Philadelphia's Right Books Campaign, which aims to put libraries in classrooms around the city.

Committee chair and former Gov. Ed Rendell tells the Philadelphia Inquirer they wanted to have a significant impact through the convention on the Philadelphia community. He calls the donation "a bow on the entire convention process."

Rendell, Mayor Jim Kenney and Superintendent William Hite Jr. are to announce the gift Monday.

The money being donated had been held in escrow to secure a line of credit for the host committee. The funds are being released now that the DNC's operations are winding up. [[388177812, C]]
