Delaware Prepares to Name New Teacher of the Year

Delaware Gov. Jack Markell is getting ready to announce the 2017 Teacher of the Year.

Markell will make the announcement Tuesday evening at a banquet at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino. The winner has been selected from 20 nominees, who were chosen from the state's 9,000 public school teachers.

During the day Tuesday, Markell is visiting the classroom of the current Delaware state teacher of the year, Sandra Hall.

Nominees for the award submit a portfolio explaining their teaching philosophy, which is then evaluated by five staff members from the Delaware Department of Education. The process also involves observations of the teacher in the classroom.

The winner goes on to compete in the national program.
