Delaware Encouraging State Park Visitations on New Year's

Delaware is encouraging people to celebrate New Year's Day outdoors in one of its state parks.

The Delaware State News reports park officials expect attendance at state parks to increase by 15 percent on Jan. 1 during the First Day Hikes initiative.

Division of Parks and Recreation Director Ray Bivens says he is excited about the state of the park system this year, following what was a record-setting fiscal year the last time around.

From July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015, state parks recorded more than six million visitors. In September, Delaware earned the 2016 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management.

The weather on New Year's Day 2016 is expected to be chilly but sunny.
