Democratic National Convention Could Bring More Traffic to Delaware Memorial Bridge

Traffic restrictions during the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia could mean more traffic on the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

The News Journal reports the Secret Service is banning vehicles more than 5 tons from Interstate 95 between Interstates 76 and 676 in Philadelphia from Saturday to July 29. I-95 passes within 600 feet of the Wells Fargo Center, where the convention is being held.

The truck ban will be enforced by police. Truckers are being told to find alternate routes.

Delaware Motor Transport Association executive director Lee Derrickson says more than 20,000 tractor-trailers travel on I-95 in Delaware every day. Derrickson worries the truck prohibition will increase congestion on the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

Delaware Department of Transportation spokesman Gene Donaldson says the disruptions shouldn't severely impact Delaware drivers. He says the closures aren't a traffic issue, but a security matter.
