Feds Take On Wilmington Housing Authority

The federal government last year threatened to sever funding to the Wilmington Housing Authority after issuing a scathing review regarding how the authority is run.

Citing a recently obtained October letter, The News Journal of Wilmington reports that the director of the Philadelphia branch of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development told the Wilmington Housing Authority board that it was undertrained and its chairman overbearing.

Philadelphia HUD director Monica Hawkins wrote in the letter that WHA Board Chairman Herman Holloway, Jr. inappropriately meddles in housing operations.

Holloway says he takes an active role when he believes staff members aren't properly addressing important issues.

Hawkins says some of the issues brought up last year have been addressed, but federal officials are continuing to monitor Holloway and the organization.
