Man Shot, Killed During Scuffle With Police Outside Delaware County Courthouse

A man attempting to escape police custody was shot and killed outside the Delaware County District Courthouse Friday morning, officials said.

Darren Lamar Williams allegedly fled from his holding cell after being arraigned earlier in the day, according to Delaware County District Attorney Katayoun Copeland.

Williams pushed passed law enforcement officers, ran out of the courthouse and into the parking lot.

There, a scuffle ensued between Williams and two law enforcement officers. A constable used a stun gun on Williams, who fell to the ground and grabbed one of the officers' guns, Copeland said.

According to the district attorney, Williams had control of the gun as the officer tried to wrestle it back. During the fight, Williams shot himself.

The constable, who was present during the fight, also shot Williams, Copeland said. He died on the ground.

Williams was arrested Thursday for driving under the influence, resisting arrest, possessing drug paraphernalia and related charges, according to court records. He also allegedly threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend earlier in the week, Copeland said.
