Obama Challenges Indonesia's Agricultural Restrictions, Delaware Applauds

Members of Delaware's congressional delegation are applauding the Obama administration's challenge to Indonesia's restrictions on agricultural imports.

U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman has asked the World Trade Organization to establish a dispute settlement panel to examine Indonesia's import restrictions on a wide range of agricultural products, including poultry.

Sens. Tom Carper and Chris Coons applauded the action this week, noting that such restrictions can hurt Delaware chicken farmers and the Delmarva peninsula's multi-billion dollar poultry industry.

Coons noted that the WTO sided with the United States last year in ruling that India had illegally blocked imports of U.S. poultry based on unfounded claims about avian influenza, which Coons said were hurting Delaware chicken growers.
