A Delaware woman who pleaded guilty but mentally ill in a 1999 murder case is asking the state Board of Pardons to commute her life sentence.

Adrianne R. Young planned to represent herself without a lawyer at Thursday's hearing.

Young was charged in the murder William J. McGinley. According to court records, she went to McGinley's house armed with a gun, knowing he wanted to have sex with her and intending to rob him.

After the jury in the case announced that it was hopelessly deadlocked, a judge preparing for a second trial concluded that Young was suffering from clinical depression and allowed her to plead guilty but mentally ill. In exchange, prosecutors withdrew a petition for the death penalty.
