Del. Electric Co-op Proposes Rate Hike

The Delaware Electric Cooperative is proposing a supply rate hike.

The News Journal reports that it's the first time in six years the co-op has proposed an increase. The co-op's board plans to vote on the increase on Wednesday night. The co-op serves 84,000 customers in Kent and Sussex counties.

The increase would raise supply charges on customer bills from 1.56 cents per kilowatt hour to 2.4 cents per kwh. The increase in summer rates would mean an extra $8.40 on the monthly bill of a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours per month.

The increase is being driven by higher costs from the co-op's power supplier, Old Dominion Electric Cooperative.

If approved, the increase would take effect on June 1.
