Deadly Crash Snarls Schuylkill Expressway for Hours

Motorcyclist dies in 3-vehicle wreck along eastbound I-76

A deadly motorcycle crash closed part of the eastbound Schuylkill Expressway for nearly six hours Thursday morning, forcing drivers off onto surface roads into the morning rush.

The 41-year-old biker from New Castle, Delaware lost control of his Harley Davidson motorcycle around 3 a.m. and was thrown from his bike along Interstate 76 east approaching Passyunk Avenue, stat police said.

A 59-year-old Philadelphia woman driving a 2003 Acura TL in the left lane couldn't avoid striking the biker, state police said.

The motorcyclist died at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

A 30-year-old man driving a 2002 Cadillac Escalade in the right lane struck debris, police said.

The roadway remained closed at 8 a.m., police diverting traffic off at exit 346B – Grays Ferry/University Avenue. A tow truck had taken away the damaged vehicles but the investigation into the cause of the wreck continued.

The roadway finally reopened just before 9 a.m. but residual delays remained, NBC10 First Alert Traffic reporter Jessica Boyington said.
