One of Philadelphia’s iconic sporting events, the Dad Vail Regatta, takes over the Schuylkill River this weekend. With the return of the largest collegiate regatta in the United States comes a major road closure and detours.
Rowers from colleges around the country will compete on the Schuylkill River in Fairmount Park on May 12 and 13.
Starting Thursday, May 11 at 10 a.m., the Kelly Drive will be detoured along a 1.5-mile stretch from Strawberry Mansion Drive to Fountain Green Drive, Philadelphia police warned motorists.
The Kelly Drive closure will allow crews to get boats and other equipment to the river's edge and continues until Saturday, May 13 at 8 p.m. During that time only permitted vehicles can enter the regatta zone.
Cars will be detoured off the river drive.
Inbound traffic toward Center City will be sent “south up the Strawberry Mansion Drive ramp to Reservoir Drive, south on Reservoir Drive to Fountain Green Drive, west on Fountain Green Drive back to the Kelly Drive,” police said in a news release.
Outbound traffic toward Roxborough will be sent “east on Fountain Green Drive to Reservoir Drive, north on Reservoir Drive to Strawberry Mansion Drive, north on the Strawberry Mansion Drive ramp back to the Kelly Drive,” police said.
Detour signs will be posted throughout the route, police said.
You can use The Schuylkill Expressway (Interstate 76) as an alternate route both days. And, the Martin Luther King Drive on the other side of the river can be used Thursday and Friday (it is closed for recreational use during the day Saturday).
Spectators will be sent to paid parking areas off Reservoir Drive, police said.
