Corrections Officer Charged in Drug Smuggling Scheme

A correctional officer in the Delaware Department of Correction was arrested and charged for his alleged part in a drug and cell phone smuggling scheme, according to Delaware State Police.

James T. Vaughn Correctional Center employee Darryl L. West Jr., 27, of Bridgeville was arrested on Saturday after a short investigation by state police.

The Department of Correction Internal Affairs tipped police off to the scheme involving West, an imnate and two others.

Authorities say an inmate made arrangements for West to meet with someone outside of the correctional facility to pick up marijuana and cell phones in exchange for $800.

Police confirm West met the man, picked up 113.2 grams of pot, two Nokia cell phones and $700. They say the plan called for West to bring the drugs and phones inside the facility, drop them off at a predetermined location, where another inmate would pick it up and deliver it.

The correctional officer was taken into custody and charged with possession and other offenses. He is being held on $15,000 bond.
