A ceremony and groundbreaking was held today for the start of construction for an LGBT-friendly senior housing complex. It’s the first urban project of its kind in Philadelphia.

The six-story building, located in the city’s “Gayborhood,”  on South 13th Street, will feature 56 one-bedroom units, a 5,000-square-foot enclosed courtyard, 2,000 square feet of rentable ground floor retail space and multi-purpose spaces to be shared by residents and the larger community.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and Congressman Bob Brady attended today’s ceremony.

The $20 million project received funding from city, state and federal resources. It’s set to be completed by the end of 2013.
