Conference Seeks Common Ground Between Police, Communities

Federal, state and local authorities are gathering in Trenton to discuss how to build trust between communities and those who police them.

Among the speakers at Wednesday's daylong conference are U.S. attorney Paul Fishman and acting state Attorney General John Hoffman.

Hoffman touted a law enforcement effort that has drastically reduced murders and gun violence in Trenton over the last two years, and that was put into effect with significant community involvement.

Fishman says communities have to feel that those who are sworn to uphold the law and protect them will do so without violating their rights.

On the other side, Fishman says people also must be proactive in addressing the problems in their own neighborhoods.
