College Student Gets House Arrest in Fatal Texting Car Crash

A western Pennsylvania college student will continue his education - albeit on house arrest - after pleading guilty to texting while driving and two counts of involuntary manslaughter in a 2012 crash.

Twenty-one-year-old Austin Molinich, of Nanty Glo, apologized to the victims' family, before he was sentenced to eight months to seven years in jail after Monday's guilty plea. But a Cambria County judge is letting him serve the sentence on house arrest so he can continue schooling at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

Richland Township police say Molinich was texting or had just finished doing so before he crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a car driven by 71-year-old Donald Evans Sr., of Conemaugh Township on June 11, 2012. Evans and his 19-year-old granddaughter, Cassandra Singer, died.
