Firefighters Battle Delaware Apartment Fire

Crews battled a fire at a Delaware apartment complex Saturday evening.

The two-alarm fire started at the Edge of Greentree Apartments on the 700 block of Appletree Court in Claymont, Delaware shortly after 6 p.m.

"It went from smoke to flames in a matter of two or three minutes," said Steve Russell, who witnessed the fire and ran to the complex to warn residents. "I just started beating on doors saying, 'Everybody, fire! Fire, smoke, everybody out!'"

The fire caused $800,000 in damage to two three-story buildings and 22 units.

"The worst thing (about) this is it got a head start on us," said Claymont Fire Chief Ed Hassel. "It got up in the attic which causes us to really have to chase the fire."

Firefighters brought the flames under control. No one was injured. Officials continue to investigate the cause.

Displaced residents were allowed back into their apartments to gather their belongings but won't be able to stay. The Red Cross is currently assisting them.
