Gov. Chris Christie heads to Camden today to talk about the effects of sweeping police department changes in a city that consistently ranks among the nation's most violent.
The old city police department was eliminated in May 2013 and replaced by a new department run by the Camden County government. The change shed costly union contracts and put more officers on the street.
It was endorsed by the Republican governor and the Democratic officials who run the city and county governments.
Reported crime has fallen as the new patrols have launched.
With a new academy class graduating Tuesday, the force will reach 320 members. That's about twice as many as the city force had before it was dissolved.
