Former Fire Chief's Home Goes Up in Flames

The home of a retired South Jersey fire chief went up in flames Wednesday leaving two people hurt.

The Mount Ephraim home belonging to retired Camden Fire Chief Joseph Marini caught fire shortly before 10 a.m.

Marini wasn’t home at the time of the blaze but his stepson suffered critical burns and another man suffered smoke inhalation, investigators said.

An initial investigation revealed that workers were using a paint stripper in the basement of the 3rd Avenue home when it went up in flames, said Camden County Chief Fire Marshal Paul Sandrock.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to bring the single-home blaze under control.
