Longtime Pennsylvania Congressman Charlie Dent Says Goodbye to U.S House

Pennsylvania GOP Rep. Charlie Dent to resign from House Friday

Republican Rep. Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania says Friday will be his last day in Congress, after saying last month that he wouldn't finish his seventh term.

Dent gave his goodbye address to Congress Thursday.

"It has truly been an honor and privilege to serve the people of Pennsylvania's 15th District and I'm proud of my time in Congress," Dent told his colleagues. "I believe that I've made a difference and have improved the lives of the constituents I have served."

Dent, the leader of a group of GOP moderates, had said last year he wouldn't seek re-election. Dent has been a frequent critic of President Donald Trump and the polarization on Capitol Hill. He was facing a potentially hostile electorate in 2018.

Last month, Dent said he'd leave early, making him the third Pennsylvania Republican to resign from Congress this session. A special election to fill the final two months of Dent's term will be held Nov. 6, the day of the general election.

Dent's district, which used to cover parts of the Lehigh Valley and points west to the suburbs of Harrisburg, was redrawn in February under court order and it's now considered a toss-up.
