Elderly Driver Slams Minivan Into Preschool, 3 Kids Hurt: Cops

Police say woman, 83, hit the gas instead of the brakes as she crashed her minivan into a hallway

A woman, 83, hit the gas instead of the brakes on her car, slamming into a North Philadelphia day care center and preschool, housed inside a church.

Three children suffered non life-threatening injuries, Philadelphia Police said.

The accident happened shortly after 1 p.m. at the Deliverance Evangelist Church at W Lehigh Avenue and N 21st Street -- that's the former location of Shibe Park, a.k.a Connie Mack Stadium, the longtime home of the Philadelphia Phillies and Athletics.

The van, which had handicapped plates, hit the church and went completely inside the Bright Beginnings Head Start, according to witnesses.

Parents showed up throughout the afternoon to pick up their children.

"I got a call that something had happened at the school and get to the school right away," said Sorhonia Fripps, who has a 4-year-old daughter at the preschool.

In the wake of the Connecticut shootings parents were a bit scared to get a phone call from the school and relieved it wasn't worse.

"It's just a scary moment," Rasheedah Anderson

"Thank God everybody is safe," Fripps said.
