Camden Girl Stabbed in Brutal Assault Prepares to Leave Hospital

A 12-year-old Camden girl, who was stabbed and brutally assaulted by a neighbor, is preparing to leave the hospital for the first time since her attack.

Family members are preparing to take the young girl home from Cooper University Hospital where she has undergone several surgeries after a neighbor stabbed her and killed her 6-year-old brother last month, according to police.

Investigators say Osvaldo Rivero, 31, slashed the throats of both children after breaking into their home on the 900 block of Ware Street the morning of September 2.

County prosecutors say the little boy tried to protect his sister from Rivero who was trying to sexually assault her. The boy died from his injuries. Rivero told investigators he was smoking a combination of marijuana and PCP, known as "Wet" just before the killing.

The little girl’s aunt, Kim Burgos, spoke to NBC 10’s Katy Zachry in an exclusive interview Sunday.

“We're excited, we're very happy, but we'll never feel the happiness we once did,” Kim Burgos said.  “I’m so proud of her. I admire her bravery, her strength, her courage, everything.”

The young victim currently requires the use of a wheelchair and is expected to undergo a lot of rehab, family members told NBC 10. Police credit the girl's brother for trying to save her life.

“Like they say he's a hero. He's definitely proven he's a hero,” Peter Burgos, the girl’s uncle, told NBC 10.

The young victim says she thanks everyone who supported her.

Family members say the little girl will probably never go back to the home where the attack took place.
